Careers On Wheels Day

Posted: Tue, May 28, 2013
Each Spring New Hampton Elementary School celebrates Career Awareness.  This year they hosted a Careers on Wheels Day for all elementary students.  The purpose of this day is to expose students to a variety of careers that involve a vehicle of some kind and to show students the workplace opportunities of our community.

Any business/industry in New Hampton that uses wheels (a vehicle) was invited to attend this event which was held last Friday, May 24th.  Businesses brought their vehicle to the Elementary School playground and had an employee there to talk with the kids about their job, how they use the vehicle at their place of work, and how important STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is in the workplace.

Below are a few pictures from the fun-filled afternoon.

The Fiscal Year 2013 Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) was announced this morning!  This grant and guaranteed loan program helps agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy costs and consumption and helps meet America's critical energy needs.

Agricultural producers and rural small businesses are eligible to apply.  Grants are available to reimburse 25% of the costs to purchase and install renewable energy or energy efficiency improvements.  The guaranteed loans can cover 75% of the costs up to $25 million.  Grants are also available to reimburse the 25% of the costs of a feasibility study for renewable energy projects up to $50,000.

Black Hills Energy Efficiency Programs

Posted: Fri, February 8, 2013
Below is a general link to Black Hills Energy's energy efficiency programs both residential and commercial.

http://www.blackhillsenergy.com/services/programs/ee-ia.php

The Black Hills Energy commercial and industrial custom rebate program can aid in reducing energy costs as well as helping reduce the payback period of your new equipment and making it upfront more affordable.

Many of the rebates listed require a comprehensive energy evaluation be completed prior to receiving assistance.  This involves a review of energy consumption of the building to identify the characteristics, condition and performance of the facility's energy systems.  There is a minimal cost of $50.  To be eligible for the energy audit the facilities must be less than 25,000 square feet.   For a business to request an energy evaluation they can call us toll-free at 888-567-0799 or complete and submit the form on the internet.

The primary energy efficiency programs for commercial are the Prescriptive, Custom, and  Non-residential new construction.  Each has a link under the general commercial program heading.

The Prescriptive rebates are generally for the purchase of high-efficiency space and water heating and commercial cooking equipment where the energy savings are easy to calculate from the old equipment being replace.

Custom rebates are available to Black Hills Energy commercial and industrial customers for projects that reduce natural gas usage and are not covered under the Iowa Prescriptive Rebate Program.

The Black Hills Energy Commercial New Construction program covers new construction and major renovations, primarily in the commercial sector, some multi-family and light industrial projects may also qualify. The intent is to reduce natural gas usage in buildings by ensuring they are designed and built with energy efficiency in mind.   This program requires the business to work with our folks in the design stages.  Financial incentives are available to help offset the initial costs associated with the design and installation of energy-efficient options that are incorporated into the building.

If you have any questions regarding the energy efficiency programs, contact Black Hills Energy at 888-567-0799.

New State Program Addresses Skilled Workforce Shortage

Posted: Wed, December 19, 2012
An estimated 4,400 students will be the first recipients of a new state grant program aimed at increasing the number of skilled workers in the state, according to the Iowa College Student Aid Commission (Iowa College Aid).

The Iowa Skilled Workforce Tuition Grant is also referred to as the Kibbie Grant after former Iowa Senate President Jack Kibbie, who sponsored the bill that created the grant during the 2012 session.  An additional $5 million was provided in the education appropriations bill to fund the grant for Iowa students enrolled in specified vocational-technical or career option programs at Iowa community colleges.

Iowa Workforce Development estimates that some 50 percent of all jobs in the state required an associate's degree, certification, or apprenticeship training, but only 33 percent of Iowa workers have such skills.

"Iowa employers have jobs they need to fill, but the state doesn't currently have the skilled workforce needed," stated Karen Misjak, executive director of Iowa College Aid, the agency responsible for the administration of the program.  "The Kibbie Grant is a win-win for everyone.  It provides much needed financial assistance to students at our community colleges while helping to increase the number of skilled workers needed in job shortage fields."

The minimum Kibbie Grant award is one-half of the average Iowa community college tuition and mandatory fees per year for up to two years in education.  Part-time students may be eligible for pro-rated amounts.

To be eligible, a student must:
    Be an Iowa resident.
Be enrolled in at least three credit hours in a qualified program of study at an Iowa community college.
File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on or before July 1 of    each year.
Demonstrate a high level of financial need.

More information about the Kibbie Grant, including the qualified programs of study that were identified by both Iowa Workforce Development and Iowa's community college presidents, can be found on Iowa College Aid's website, www.IowaCollegeAid.gov. For more information about other resources available to help families plan, prepare and pay for college, please contact Iowa College Aid at 877-272-4456.

FedEx Launches Seventh Annual Small Business Grant Contest

FedEx Launches Seventh Annual Small Business Grant Contest

$220,500 in Total Cash and Prizes Up for Grabs in 2019 Contest

MEMPHIS, Tenn., February 19, 2019—FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) today announced the launch of its seventh annual Small Business Grant Contest. This year, the contest offers grants and services to ten U.S. based small businesses, distributing a collective prize pool of $220,500—the largest sum since the contest was established in 2012. In addition to the grants, winners will also receive an additional dollar amount in credit to use towards FedEx Office print and business services to help run their businesses, as well as packages designed to help them with website optimization, design thinking, social media, and print expertise. Specifically, the 2019 FedEx Small Business Grant Contest prize packages include:

Grand prize: One (1) winner of $50,000, plus $7,500 in FedEx Office® print and business services

Silver prize: One (1) winner of $30,000, plus $5,000 in FedEx Office print and business services

Bronze prize: Eight (8) winners of $15,000, plus $1,000 in FedEx Office print and business services

"We know it's difficult for even the most promising of small businesses to grow and scale, especially at the beginning of their lifecycle" said Scott Harkins, senior vice president, Customer Channel Marketing at FedEx. "That's why we are proud to offer our top ten winners so much more than just the funds to help them grow their businesses. This year, our winners will receive much needed expertise and advice on some of the most fundamental and critical aspects of building a viable and sustainable business - and we will stay on with them as a trusted advisor as they take their businesses to the next level."

The 2018 contest garnered nearly 665,000 votes and attracted more than 7,800 candidates from across the United States. Grand Prize winner Rumi Spice, a small Chicago-based business that sources and brings to market premier saffron from the fields of Afghanistan, was founded by former Army officer Keith Alaniz and two friends who, while serving in the war-torn country, realized the need to provide economic alternatives to opium farming for the Afghan people. In the year since they took home the grand prize in the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest, Rumi Spice has used their winnings to greatly improve their supply chain logistics, as they transport the saffron out of Afghanistan and bring it to Chicago where it is then packaged and sent to Michelin star restaurants and consumers all over the US.

Over the past seven years, 24,000 businesses have entered the contest in the United States alone. The contest has now grown from one country to eleven countries and the grant pool for the US contest has grown from $50,000 to $220,500 in total cash prizes.

The 2019 FedEx Small Business Grant Contest is open to U.S.-based for-profit small businesses that have less than 99 employees and have been operating for six months or more. To enter, participants must visit www.fedex.com/grantcontest and enter their contact information, write a short profile about their business and upload four photos of their business or product, including their logo. While not required, participants also have the option of submitting a 90-second "elevator speech" video to supplement their entry.

The contest entry period is open from February 19 to March 25, 2019, with voting to take place from February 27 to April 1, 2019.  Following a judging period, winners will be announced on April 29, 2019 at www.fedex.com/grantcontest.
