Critical Access Hospital Program

Posted: Fri, August 30, 2013
A couple weeks ago, the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a report with recommendations to modify and substantially constrain the Medicare "Critical Access Hospital" (CAH) program.  CAH is a federal designation under which most small, rural hospitals like Mercy - New Hampton operate and are paid our "reasonable costs" for serving Medicare patients.  The effect of the recommendations, if approved by Congress and the President, would cost the typical small rural hospital over $1 million annually and seriously threaten the viability of 70% of rural hospitals in the country including Mercy - New Hampton.  The further consequence would be a substantial reduction in the availability of health care services throughout rural areas of the country and of course a serious economic blow to hundreds of small communities.

Senators Grassley and Harkin have already gone on record as opposed to the proposal, but it is vitally important that they and Congressman King hear from us on this issue in the weeks and months ahead.  This is an issue that the 80% of Americans who live in urban areas don't care about, so we who live in rural areas must let our opinions be known.

Thanks in advance for your awareness and assistance in contacting our federal representatives.  If you have any questions, you can contact Bruce Roesler at Mercy Medical Center-New Hampton, 641-394-1634.

Each Spring New Hampton Elementary School celebrates Career Awareness.  This year they hosted a Careers on Wheels Day for all elementary students.  The purpose of this day is to expose students to a variety of careers that involve a vehicle of some kind and to show students the workplace opportunities of our community.

Any business/industry in New Hampton that uses wheels (a vehicle) was invited to attend this event which was held last Friday, May 24th.  Businesses brought their vehicle to the Elementary School playground and had an employee there to talk with the kids about their job, how they use the vehicle at their place of work, and how important STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is in the workplace.

Below are a few pictures from the fun-filled afternoon.

The Fiscal Year 2013 Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) was announced this morning!  This grant and guaranteed loan program helps agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy costs and consumption and helps meet America's critical energy needs.

Agricultural producers and rural small businesses are eligible to apply.  Grants are available to reimburse 25% of the costs to purchase and install renewable energy or energy efficiency improvements.  The guaranteed loans can cover 75% of the costs up to $25 million.  Grants are also available to reimburse the 25% of the costs of a feasibility study for renewable energy projects up to $50,000.
