Pamida will switch to Shopko!

Posted: Fri, May 4, 2012
Pamida will switchover to Shopko in the coming fall.  You may have noticed a few changes already.  They have repainted the front of the building and they will get a new Shopko sign once they officially switch over.

During the transition the pharmacy will stay open and keep its normal hours, but the store itself may close for up to 2 weeks to switch over merchandise.  Don Boeck, store manager, is excited about the change.  It will bring more of a selection to the community; a few things being: clothing, shoes, & home furnishings.  Keep an eye out for these changes, as we will continue to post updates!

Main Street Banners

Posted: Wed, May 2, 2012
As Spring approached and the Chamber looked at putting up the Spring banners on Main Street, it was brought to their attention that the Winter banners were larger and adjusting the arms on the light poles was not advised as it would damage the poles.

It was decided that the banners will be placed on the lower arm of the Main Street light poles and a metal rod will be put in the bottom pouch to keep the banners down.

We want to send out a BIG THANK YOU to Jamie & Nick at NH Metal Fab for donating the metal rods that will be inserted into the banners and to Bill Brinks Upholstery for doing the sewing at the ends of the banners.  Joyce Laures did an excellent job in getting this all arranged.  The banners will be put up soon!  Once again, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!

Hotel/Motel Tax Meeting

Posted: Wed, April 18, 2012
We had a very successful Hotel/Motel Tax Meeting this morning.  Plans are in the works to move forward with this.

Hotel/Motel Tax is very beneficial for the community.  Out of the 99 counties in Iowa only about 20 do not have this tax implemented, Chickasaw being one.  The money generated from this tax goes back into the community/county for numerous different things.  Examples of how the money generated from this tax could be used are:  for tourism; for local grants available to communities or non-profits for marketing community festivals, programs or events that would attract visitors; for park departments to be used for improvements; for updating welcome signs for the community; and for a capital improvements fund which down the road could be used to construct more bike trails.  These are only a few examples of how the money raised would be beneficial to the community & county.

We have set up three committees to help move this cause forward.  If you would be interested in being on a committee, please contact Mary Schrandt-Prouty, Chickasaw County Tourism, by email or phone 319-240-3488.

NH Street Restoration Project

Posted: Tue, April 3, 2012
The City of New Hampton contracted with Yaggy Colby Associates to design and engineer a street restoration project. The project will include repair of deficient sanitary sewer manholes, storm sewer manholes/intakes, curb and gutter and street patches. Upon completion of the repairs, the crack and seat process will be utilized on the existing pavement followed by a Hot Mix Asphalt overlay.  During the crack and seat process, the concrete pavement is cracked into smaller-than-joint length pieces and rolled before asphalt resurfacing.  River City Paving - Division of Mathy Construction will be doing the project.

The total project cost is approximately $1.5 million. They will begin construction by no later than April 30th.  The following streets are included in the project:

Segment                      Length of Project (Blocks)
West Hamilton Street              2.6
South 3rd Ave.                       0.9

East Milwaukee St.                 6.1
South 1st Ave.                       4.8

"Filling" Main Street

Posted: Tue, February 28, 2012
New Hampton Economic Development officials are pitching several incentive programs to help "fill" Main Street.  New Hampton realizes the importance of having a full Main Street and we need people to know that there is assistance available, says New Hampton Economic Development Director, Tammy Robinson.  There are several empty storefronts available in the downtown area, and our organization is ready to help those who are thinking about starting a new business.
Among the programs Economic Development offers are start-up grants, loan programs and one in which we will cover the rent costs for a new business.  These programs are tailored to each individual business.  There are also non-financial programs that can help a start-up business as well.  Those programs include mentoring and developing business plans and the help of the UNI Business Center.  This program will help people who want to start a business connect with the experts.
