New Physicians to Join Mercy

Mercy Medical Center - New Hampton and Mercy Family Clinic are excited to welcome two new family physicians, Drs. Nathan & Heather Harms.

Drs. Nathan & Heather Harms visited New Hampton the beginning of March and were impressed by our hospital facilities and staff, the progressive community and friendly people they met.

"Mercy physicians and staff feel so blessed to welcome Dr. Nathan and Dr. Heather to the Mercy Medical Center - New Hampton family," stated Aaron Flugum, CEO.  "They will both be amazing additions to our clinic, hospital and community."

Drs. Nathan and Heather are trained in family, inpatient and emergency medicine.  They will also both care for obstetrics patients.  Similar to the other Mercy Family Clinic physicians, they will do medical missions in Canillá, Guatemala with DOCS for Hope on a rotating schedule.

Dr. Nathan Harms graduated from Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology/pre-medicine with a minor in history.  He then attended the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine and also met his wife, Heather.  Dr. Harms is currently finishing his family medicine residency at St. Mary's in Grand Junction, Colorado.  During his training, Dr. Nathan has traveled to Africa and Tanzania for medical missions.

Dr. Heather Harms attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Spanish with a minor in Biology.  Dr. Heather then graduated with her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.  She is currently completing her residency program at St. Mary's in Grand Junction, Colorado.  Dr. Heather has been doing mission work in Canillá, Guatemala since she was in middle school.  Her parents work in an orphanage close to the DOC for Hope hospital site.  Dr. Heather is excited to continue to serve the people of Canillá and also spend time with her family and the many friends she has met there.

Drs. Harms will begin seeing patients at Mercy Family Clinic in October.  When they arrive in New Hampton a meet and greet celebration with the community will be held.

Chickasaw County Achieves Skilled Iowa Community Status

New Hampton, IA - Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) Director Beth Townsend announced today Chickasaw County has achieved Skilled Iowa Community status by meeting the metrics for both business commitments and workforce certifications.

"I am proud of the all the hard-work and dedication the leadership in Chickasaw County has put into achieving this designation," said Townsend. "Retaining and attracting a strong workforce is essential for Chickasaw County companies to grow and innovate. This designation will go a long way to help."

In order to become a Skilled Iowa Community, Chickasaw County had to have:
•    five percent of the local workforce earn a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC)
•    20 percent of workers receiving unemployment insurance benefits or other specified services become NCRC certified
•    10 percent of the local employers (who represent 20 percent of the total workforce) commit to supporting the Skilled Iowa Initiative in their hiring process

The Skilled Iowa Initiative has notable benefits for local economic development efforts. Skilled Iowa aims to assist local economies in boosting the qualifications of their local workers and as a result, making the community a more attractive place for new and existing businesses.

The initiative encourages workers and students to earn an NCRC, as well as encouraging employers to recognize the certificate in the hiring process. Those earning an NCRC take a test to measure crucial workplace skills in areas such as applied mathematics, reading for information and locating information.

Skilled Iowa urges all communities in the state to visit www.skillediowa.org to learn more about this economic growth opportunity and about making the commitment to become a Skilled Iowa Community.

Thank you to everyone who took the test to help us become a Skilled Iowa Community!
