Flushing Hydrants

Tree Trimming

According to New Hampton City CodeSection 66.6 -The owner or agent of the abutting property shall keep the trees on or overhanging the street trimmed so that all branches will be at least 15feet above the surface of the street and 8 feet above the sidewalks, and do not interfere with or obscure utility wires, street lights, or street signs. If you have trees that are in violation of the City Code, please have them trimmed by September 13th so the City will not have to take action.  The compost site will be open free of charge the month of September.

Theisen's Home Farm Auto is excited to announce we are moving.  In order to better serve our loyal New Hampton customers, we are moving from our current 16,200 sq ft building at 413 W Milwaukee St. to a larger 42,000 sq. ft former Shopko store at 660 W Milwaukee St.

The new building will be more than twice the size of our current location which will enable us to provide an extensive expansion of products throughout all departments.  Specifically, in the areas of clothing, footwear, farm, pets, sporting goods and hardware. Customers will enjoy new automotive service bays, a Red Wing® footwear shop, expanded Wrangler, Carhartt, and Ariat offerings.  A full line of firearms and expanded hunting equipment will be added along with a Yeti shop in Sporting Goods.  An expanded line of DeWalt and Milwaukee power tools along with Hobart welding equipment in Hardware.  New brands of pet food and basic consumable offerings.  And much more.

We hope to be in our new location and open by the end of October, 2019.

TRIBE Trail Lands $100,000 Grant

The TRIBE Trail's second phase is definitely a go after committee members learned last week that the Wellmark Foundation has awarded the trail a $100,000 grant.

That means the TRIBE Trail Committee has enough money to go ahead with the bidding process for Phase II of the trail that will run from Logan Street to Linn Avenue and cost about $625,000 to build.

Committee member Megan Baltes said the committee had used the Wellmark grant in its preliminary calculations on how much money it had raised so "this is really big for us to have it secured and we're very appreciative of the Wellmark Foundation's belief in our project."

Along with grants from the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Black Hawk Gaming Association, the Chickasaw County Community Foundation and Wellmark, the committee has also received about $249,000 in private donations to help fund Phase II of the trail that will eventually connect trails in Mikkelson Park and the city's west-side Industrial Park.

Because the Iowa Department of Transportation's grant comes from its Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) that is funded by federal dollars, the committee must bid out Phase II of the project.

Baltes and fellow TRIBE Trail Committee member Rick Kramer expect to bid the project in June and work will begin sometime this August and be completed by the fall.

Phase I of the TRIBE Trail runs from Mikkelson Park through the Boy Scout Playground, down Fourth Avenue and through Garnant Park and was built in the fall of 2017.

Saturday - 9 am - 1 pm

Fees will be:  $2.00 per licensed vehicle or trailer
                     $5.00 per dump truck load

New Hampton Municipal Light Plant & New Hampton Economic Development Honored with Economic Development Impact Award

Iowa's rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities commitment goes far beyond ensuring safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible energy. They actively create strategic partnerships and provide technical and financial assistance to support business growth and community vitality. Annually, Iowa Area Development Group (IADG) presents Impact Awards to utility partners who were involved in significant economic development initiatives the prior year. During a meeting of the New Hampton Industrial Development Corporation, the New Hampton Municipal Light Plant & New Hampton Economic Development was recognized for their economic development accomplishments and commitment to the community.  

New Hampton Municipal Light Plant & New Hampton Economic Development was presented with an IADG Impact Award for community development. New Hampton Municipal Light Plant & New Hampton Economic Development has supported economic development in the community for many years. A recent example of project participation includes support for the $6 million facility renovation project for the Mercy One - New Hampton Medical Center. This upgrade provides improved health care, better patient privacy, new technology, and a renovated emergency department. All combined, these increased capabilities will provide much needed health care infrastructure for the community, its employers and residents. New Hampton Municipal Light Plant & New Hampton Economic Development secured a $300,000 grant from the USDA Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant program to support this project. New Hampton Municipal Light Plant provided an additional $60,000 in matching funds. Receiving this USDA grant also established a Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) for the New Hampton Municipal Light Plant & Economic Development Office. The loan repayments will go into this newly established RLF and be available to support additional local projects for years to come.
 
"We commend Brian Quirk and the New Hampton Municipal Light Plant as well as Tammy Robinson and the New Hampton Economic Development Office for their steadfast support of business and community development," said IADG President, Rand Fisher. "They are providing important technical and financial assistance that many times is a key component in successfully securing projects that create jobs and support community vitality.

FedEx Launches Seventh Annual Small Business Grant Contest

$220,500 in Total Cash and Prizes Up for Grabs in 2019 Contest


MEMPHIS, Tenn., February 19, 2019—FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) today announced the launch of its seventh annual Small Business Grant Contest. This year, the contest offers grants and services to ten U.S. based small businesses, distributing a collective prize pool of $220,500—the largest sum since the contest was established in 2012. In addition to the grants, winners will also receive an additional dollar amount in credit to use towards FedEx Office print and business services to help run their businesses, as well as packages designed to help them with website optimization, design thinking, social media, and print expertise. Specifically, the 2019 FedEx Small Business Grant Contest prize packages include:

       Grand prize: One (1) winner of $50,000, plus $7,500 in FedEx Office® print and business services

       Silver prize: One (1) winner of $30,000, plus $5,000 in FedEx Office print and business services

       Bronze prize: Eight (8) winners of $15,000, plus $1,000 in FedEx Office print and business services

The 2018 contest garnered nearly 665,000 votes and attracted more than 7,800 candidates from across the United States. Grand Prize winner Rumi Spice, a small Chicago-based business that sources and brings to market premier saffron from the fields of Afghanistan, was founded by former Army officer Keith Alaniz and two friends who, while serving in the war-torn country, realized the need to provide economic alternatives to opium farming for the Afghan people. In the year since they took home the grand prize in the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest, Rumi Spice has used their winnings to greatly improve their supply chain logistics, as they transport the saffron out of Afghanistan and bring it to Chicago where it is then packaged and sent to Michelin star restaurants and consumers all over the US.

 Over the past seven years, 24,000 businesses have entered the contest in the United States alone. The contest has now grown from one country to eleven countries and the grant pool for the US contest has grown from $50,000 to $220,500 in total cash prizes.

The 2019 FedEx Small Business Grant Contest is open to U.S.-based for-profit small businesses that have less than 99 employees and have been operating for six months or more. To enter, participants must visit www.fedex.com/grantcontest and enter their contact information, write a short profile about their business and upload four photos of their business or product, including their logo. While not required, participants also have the option of submitting a 90-second "elevator speech" video to supplement their entry.

The contest entry period is open from February 19 to March 25, 2019, with voting to take place from February 27 to April 1, 2019.  Following a judging period, winners will be announced on April 29, 2019 at www.fedex.com/grantcontest.

New Hampton Homecoming

New Hampton High School will begin celebrating homecoming with the parade on Thursday, September 27, and they would like to invite you to participate in the parade this year. The cost to participate in the parade is $10, with all proceeds going to the Student Senate. The parade will be at 6:30 pm on Thursday, September 27th. Live the Valley Initiative

The Cedar Valley Regional Partnership has announced the launch of an aggressive campaign aimed at showcasing the Cedar Valley's competitive career landscape, culturally rich quality of life, and affordable cost of living with the goal of attracting top-quality talent to the region.  

The integrated initiative is centered on a revamped website, www.livethevalley.com, which features a user-friendly job board that requires no registration for employers to post positions or job seekers to explore opportunities. Additionally, the site highlights the quality of life the region offers ranging from recreational amenities, culinary diversity, and accessibility to educational institutions, family-friendly activities and the availability of housing variety and affordability.
 
"The Cedar Valley is teeming with opportunities for young professionals and families looking for a community-centric place to raise their kids, while also maximizing their own career potential," said Megan Baltes, New Hampton Economic Development Assistant."  

The partnership is committed to making this tool a success. All avenues of marketing and outreach will be deployed in support of this campaign, including extensive social media activity, digital advertising strategies, and print publications as well. Stories and testimonials demonstrating why residents like to "Live the Valley" and "Work the Valley" are being sought for inclusion on social media.  A full-color print publication, in collaboration with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, will also tell the story of the people, places, opportunities and experiences in Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw and Grundy Counties. Copies will be available in the New Hampton Economic Development Office as well as distributed to local businesses and industries.

"The major recruiting benefit for employers is their job listing will be pushed to a much broader audience of top-quality talent than they could reach on their own," said Megan Baltes, New Hampton Economic Development Assistant. "We will specifically target ex-Iowans who are working and living in larger markets but may be ripe to move back home."

"The Waterloo/Cedar Falls metro was ranked among the top 10 job markets in the nation according to Zippia. Iowa was identified as third on a list of the top ten most affordable states by US News & World Report," said Megan Baltes, New Hampton Economic Development Assistant. Chickasaw County Fair Queen Competition Seeking Candidates

The Chickasaw County Fair Queen competition is currently accepting applications for the 2018 Chickasaw County Fair Queen.

Young ladies between the ages of 16-21, residing in Chickasaw County and/or have active involvement in Chickasaw County, and be involved in a leadership or service organization (church group, Girl Scouts, 4H, FFA, school council) are encouraged to apply.  Eligibility is not limited by 4H or FFA membership.
    
The Chickasaw County Fair Queen will receive a $250 scholarship and Alternate Fair Queen will receive $100 scholarship.  The queen's responsibilities will include being at the Chickasaw County achievement show, and attending the BIG 4 Fair in Nashua, representing Chickasaw County at the IA State Fair, and various events throughout the year in Chickasaw County.

ATEK Metal Technologies Announces Expansion

New Hampton's ATEK Metal Technologies announced on Tuesday that they're nearly doubling in size.

President Tom Christie says, "We added 40 percent to our low pressure permanent mold casting capacity to keep up with our accelerating growth."

ATEK is adding robotic de-gating and debuting of castings, which will be operational in July.

The expansion includes a 96-hundred square-foot addition and company officials say the 140 workforce will grow in the coming years.
