The City Council of the City of New Hampton met in regular session in the Council Chambers at 112 East Spring Street, New Hampton Iowa at 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2024. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Geerts at 7:00 p.m. Council members present were Denner, Fisher, Humpal, Larsen, Porath, Speltz.  Also in attendance were Casey Mai, Tammy Robinson, City Attorney Todd Prichard, Conrad Rosendahl and NH Tribune writer Kelly Terpstra.

Moved by Larsen, seconded by Denner; that the Consent Agenda be approved as presented.  Ayes – Six. Nays – None. Absent – None.  Motion carried.

 

Councilmember Humpal requested clarification on the proposed Code of Ordinance regarding pervious and non-pervious parking lot surfaces in the various zoning districts.  There was no other discussion of the Code of Ordinances.  Moved by Denner, seconded by Larsen. That the proposed Ordinance titled AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING THE ‘CODE OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF NEW HAMPTON, IOWA’, receives its second consideration.  Ayes – Denner, Fisher, Humpal, Larsen, Porath, Speltz.  Nays – None  Absent – None.  Motion carried.

 

Mayor Geerts ordered the item be on the agenda at the next regular council meeting for its third and final consideration.

 

Mayor Steve Geerts and the hiring committee are recommending the hiring of Conrad Rosendahl for the Chief of Police. Rosendahl is currently the Chief of Police in Lansing Iowa and has 17 years of experience with other police departments.  They are requesting a start date of July 1, 2024 with an annual salary of $78,165.

 

Moved by Porath, seconded by Humpal; That Resolution NO. 6646 RESOLUTION APPOINTING CONRAD ROSENDAHL TO THE POSITION OF CHIEF OF POLICE AND EXTENDING A CONTRACT, EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2024, be approved. Ayes – Denner, Fisher, Humpal, Larsen, Porath, Speltz.  Nays – None.  Absent – None.  Resolution approved.

Moved by Larsen, seconded by Speltz; That Resolution No. 6647 A RESOLUTION APPROVING SALARIES AND WAGES FOR NON-BARGAINING UNIT PERSONNEL EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2024, be approved. Ayes – Denner, Fisher, Humpal, Larsen, Porath, Speltz.  Nays – None.  Absent – None.  Resolution approved.

 

City Clerk Karen Clemens presented the updated Employee Handbook for approval.  The update included the changes approved in the recent Local #2003 union agreement effective July 1, 2024.  Moved by Larsen; seconded by Speltz; That Resolution NO. 6648 A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK FOR CITY OF NEW HAMPTON EMPLOYEES be approved.  Ayes – Denner, Fisher, Humpal, Larsen, Porath, Speltz. Nays – None. Absent – None.  Resolution approved.

Moved by Fisher, seconded by Humpal ; that the meeting adjourn at 7:22 PM . Ayes – Six. Nays – None. Absent – None.  Motion carried.
